Does This Classic Pick 3 Cycle Actually Hold Up in Ohio?
If you’ve been around Pick 3 long enough, you’ve probably heard of it:
The Old Man Trick involving the numbers 0–3–6
It’s one of those ideas that gets passed around like it’s gospel---it's:
After 0, watch 3 or 6
After 3, watch 0 or 6
After 6, watch 0 or 3
A perfect little cycle.
Clean. Simple. Easy to follow.
But I have yet to see anyone show any test of it from a lengthy time period for any one state,
so here’s the real question…
Does it actually work for the Ohio games— or just sound good?
So I tested it.

Using Ohio Pick 3 data from 2011 to present, I ran a structured backtest using Cursor.
But this time, I tightened the rules to make it realistic:
Same-game only
Midday → Midday
Evening → Evening
Each starting digit (0, 3, or 6) was tracked forward
The test looked ahead up to 6 draws
Then compared results against all possible 2-digit combinations (36 total)
That last step is key.
Because just seeing a hit rate isn’t enough.
We needed to know:
Is the 0–3–6 idea actually better than everything else?

At first glance…
The system looked strong.
Hit rates were high.
Followers were showing up.
But here’s the problem:
So were a lot of other numbers.
When you give any digit 6 draws, common numbers will naturally show up anyway.
So without a comparison…
You can fool yourself into thinking something works when it’s just normal frequency.
So instead of asking:
“Does 0 → 3 or 6 hit often?”
We asked:
“How does 3/6 rank compared to every other possible pair?”
That’s where things got interesting.

The 0–3–6 system is not balanced.
It does not work equally in all directions.
Here’s the breakdown:
Starting from 3 → (0 / 6)
This is where the system shines
Ranked #1 overall in full chain completion
Strong performance across multiple metrics
Translation:
When you start from 3… the 0/6 follow idea is legitimately strong.
Starting from 0 → (3 / 6)
Moderate at best
Middle to upper tier rankings
Not weak… but not special either
Translation:
This direction works sometimes, but it doesn’t stand out from the pack.
Starting from 6 → (0 / 3)
Weakest of the three
Lower rankings overall
Outperformed by many other combinations
Translation:
This is the part of the system that simply doesn’t hold up.
Below is a chart of the best followers after each digit in each game sharing from another post here titled Ohio's Pick 3 Favoring Digits give it a read when your done here.

Here’s the honest conclusion:
The Old 0-3-6 Man Trick is not a true cycle in Ohio Pick 3.
It sounds like a perfect loop…
But the data says:
It’s lopsided
One direction is strong
One is average
One is weak

If you’ve been playing the full 0–3–6 cycle…
You’ve been:
Overplaying weak setups
Treating all directions equally
Diluting your edge
But now you know:
The real opportunity is selective.

Instead of playing the full cycle blindly:
✔ Focus on:
3 → 0 or 6
That’s where the data gives you actual support.
Be cautious with:
0 → 3 / 6
6 → 0 / 3
These don’t carry the same weight.
This is a perfect example of why testing matters.
Some ideas in Pick 3 aren’t completely wrong…
They’re just not as clean as they sound.
And when you break them down properly…
You can turn a “legendary system” into something actually usable.

I use astrology the way others use statistics — as a decision tool.
Not to guarantee outcomes, but to recognize favorable timing and avoid unnecessary risk.
If you’re already playing, you might as well understand your own cycles.
