My sister Dawnie Walnut Christmas Cookies taken with her iPhone to get me jealous.
This is the cookie my mother always made for Christmas. If you make this cookie you don't really need to make another. Because once people have this one, it's the one they will keep reaching for again and again. When I make this cookie for the Christmas holiday, I have to hide them from my husband, else they will all be gone and I'll have to make more.
They are a bit time intensive, but that's what makes it a memorable cookie. It's the love it takes to make them.
This recipe was the harbinger to a recipe book that I made as a Christmas present for all the gals in the family who were forever asking my Mom for this cookie recipe.
I hope it becomes one of your favorites as well.

2 Cups of Flour
2 Sticks of Butter (I use salted)
Mix together (I use my hands)
Than add in
1 Egg Yolk
3/4 Cup of Sour Cream
Mix together well.
Once mixed form the dough into a Ball and coat with Flour. Wrap in wax paper and chill in refrigerator.
3/4 Cup of White Sugar
1 Teaspoon Cinnamon
3/4 Cup of Chopped Walnuts
Mixed together
Cut the Ball on Dough in 4 quarters.
Roll out half the ball so that you have a nice big square.
Once you have a square you can either roll the cookie like I have in the image here, you can cut triangles, or you can cut long strips.
If you're like my Mom who did Triangles, you will fill the large side of each Triangle with a spoon full of the nut mix and and roll the large end to the small end.
If you're like me, and double the recipe every time to make a larger batch and you need to get them done, you use the log method. Cut long wide strip from the square and fill the mix across the whole strip and then fold over until its closed. Then cut the log into smaller bite size cookie pieces.

I baked these cookies at 375° for 15 to 20 minutes depending on how thick I rolled the dough. And because all ovens are different.
I start watching at the 10-minute mark so that I make sure they just slightly brown. This is because I'm gauging the thickness of how I rolled the dough.
I like my cookie a little on the thick side because the sour cream dough is just to die for, and I like to be a two bite size cookie. But it hard to get them all the same exact size because of the dough rolling and getting perfect triangles or strips.
This recipe should make about 4 dozen cookies from each quarter give or take a couple of cookies.
Once done and cooled you can sprinkle them with Powdered Sugar and watch them disappear.
Below is a picture of my sister's Dawn's Apricot Cookies. She uses the same dough as outlined above, rolls and cuts into squares and just fills the middle with an apricot filling and folds the ends in. Her husband and kids goes nuts for these too.
Our family loves this cookie so much that whenever we make them we send each other pictures of them just to get the party started.
